BWE Receives Patent for Smart Lift Buoyancy System

While nature has given many aquatic creatures the ability to precisely control their buoyancy, engineers continue to struggle with the problems of in-water weight and maintaining proper buoyancy.  But after several years of development effort, BWE’s Smart Lift technology may be eliminating that struggle. Smart Lift is a computerized buoyancy control system that accurately controls depth, ascent or descent rate, and neutral buoyancy. The first commercial product incorporating Smart Lift will be a diver operated, 1000 lb lift system for the controlled movement of heavy objects underwater, but the system can be adapted to underwater vehicles, platforms, and other packages that could benefit from sophisticated and automated buoyancy control.

Over the years BWE has manufactured a variety of pelican hooks and release devices for different customers. The pelican hooks are used most often when there is a need to lift objects from the deck of a ship and then coordinate the object’s release into the water with ship or wave motion. Other customers use the hooks to release objects after being lowered to the seafloor. Most are oil-filled and pressure compensated and are either DC motor or solenoid actuated.

These low cost, rugged solenoids offer a high force or torque in a very compact and reliable package. They're excellent for release mechanisms, pin pullers, safety latches, and rotary indexing.
